The six lawyers representing former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in a Ksh10 million corruption case have quit.
Led by Dr John Khaminwa, the lawyers alleged that trial Magistrate Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti is biased towards their client.
Sonko appeared at Milimani Law Courts this morning. Journalists were not allowed inside the court room.
Dr Khaminwa took issue with the fact that the trial Magistrate insisted on the case going on, regardless of the advice by the accused’s team of doctors. The doctors had said Sonko should have some rest. The former governor was recently discharged after almost a month at The Nairobi Hospital.
The lead defence counsel also said the court had not given them adequate time to gather evidence to bolster their case. “I do not want to participate in an illegal process,” Dr Khaminwa said outside the court room.
The lawyer also said media should not have been barred from the trial.
