It was a normal working Tuesday for Velvine Nungari.
She spotted a frequent customer at her workplace, Destiny Gardens Hotel, where she worked as a waiter. After small talk, they agreed to have a drink later on at a hotel in Kiamumbi, Kiambu County.
A close friend of hers, who sought anonymity, informed TV47 Digital that normally, she’d go out with her friends but on this particular day (23, February 2021), none was available to accompany her.
She sent our source pictures of her date driving and of the drinks they were having through Snapchat. Later on that night, she called one of her friends using her date’s phone. The message? Her phone was off and in case she didn’t make it home, she should call the date’s phone.
“We suspect that at that point, she was drugged,” said our source. “From the pictures she sent me, I doubt that drink was enough to get her that wasted.”
Morning-After Distress Call
The 24-year-old called the same friend the following morning requesting her to get her from the hotel where they’d spent the night.
The friend asked a mutual friend to accompany him. On arrival, nothing prepared them for what they saw. Nungari was in excruciating pain; she was paralysed. She had reportedly been violently raped by her date.
They took her to Kenyatta University Referral Hospital where she was diagnosed with cervical fractures. She was subsequently admitted.
Nungari underwent surgery on March 7, but succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Nungari lived with her mother in Kirigiti area of Kiambu.
She was buried on Wednesday, March 17 at her rural home in Sabasaba, Muranga County.
Nungari’s friends and family are now hoping for justice. They want the culprit, who we cannot name for legal reasons, arrested for her brutal rape and murder.
