A man who released a video of Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip allegedly smoking shisha with a female companion was on Thursday sentenced to one year imprisonment.
Jones Ochieng Mbolo was slapped with the jail term after he pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to extort KSh200,000 from the senator on February 17, 2021.
The court heard that Mbolo threatened to release the video of Loitiptip and the lady identified as Aeedah ‘Bambi’ Pesian Ahmed smoking shisha on social media platforms, if they did not send him the money.
The senator, however, did not fall for the blackmail and instead reported the matter to police, leading to his arrest on February 15. He had already leaked the video on social media.
While delivering her ruling, Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku said that Mbolo did not show any remorse for his actions.
Senator Loitiptip was listed as one of the witnesses in the case.
“Shisha is illegal in Kenya”
Mbolo told the court that he was banking on the fact that smoking shisha is in contravention of the public health regulations.
“I released the shisha video to out Loitiptip for engaging in an illegal activity, yet, as a senator, he should be the custodian of the law,” Mbolo said.
Seeing that shisha smoking was banned in Kenya in 2017, he sent the video to Senator Loitiptip, demanding that he sends him KSh200,000 or he leaks it, but the lawmaker did not fall for the blackmail.
