President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday was forced to pause his speech at the Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma, during the state funeral of John Pombe Magufuli.
Uhuru was eulogising the late President Magufuli in the packed stadium when a nearby mosque made the call for Muslim midday prayers, Salat Al-zuhr.
Uhuru went momentarily silent for two minutes i.e. from 12:53 pm to 12:55 pm.
President Uhuru remained silent until the cleric was done with the prayers.
He would later resume his speech amid appreciation in form of a thunderous applause from the mourners.
The Muslim community has come out to appreciate President Uhuru for his respectful gesture.
“Respect to my president Uhuru Kenyatta. Pausing his speech to let the Islamic call to prayers to finish. That’s beautiful to see. The adhan is powerful,” said Ahmed Mohammed.
Uhuru eulogised Magufuli as a true Pan Africanist who taught Africans to be independent.
“I mourn a close friend. His death is a blow to me personally. I consulted him frequently on EAC matters. He showed the world that Africa can be independent.” Uhuru said.
The President also took the opportunity to motivate newly elected Tanzania President Samia Suluhu to take up her new role with courage.
“Like Joshua was told, do not be afraid. Be courageous because the Lord is with you all the time,” Uhuru told President Samia Suluhu.
The late John Magufuli will be laid to rest on March 26, 2021, in his native home in Chato District in Geita region.
