Agnes Kavindu was on Tuesday sworn in as Machakos County Senator.
The Wiper Party candidate now succeeds the late Boniface Kabaka, becoming the third senator of the county. Machakos’ first senator was Johnson Muthama.
Kavindu is also the fourth elected woman senator in the country; joining Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Margaret Kamar (Uasin Gishu) and Fatuma Dulo (Isiolo) in the Senate.
Kavindu won the March 18, 2021 senatorial by-elections by a landslide. She garnered 104,352 votes, representing 80% of the votes cast. Her closest challenger, United Democratic Alliance’s Urbanus Ngengele got a paltry 19,726 votes (15%).
Kavindu unsuccessfully vied for the Machakos Woman Representative seat in the 2017 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.
In 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed her to the 14-member Building Bridges Initiative Committee.
