It is a reprieve for Githunguri innovators behind the locally manufactured hospital beds.
This is after the Government purchased the 500 hospital beds from the three local artisans, set for distribution to health facilities across the country.
Out of the 500 ICU beds procured from the three local artisans, 170 are ready for use. The three are Mungai Gathogo, 26, and Joseph Muhinja, 35, and Paul Wangaruro.
The move follows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive to procure the beds, in a bid to support the Buy Kenya Build Kenya campaign.
“The project, being undertaken in support of the Buy Kenya Build Kenya campaign, has employed 40 artisans who are working to deliver the President’s order,” says the Ministry of Health.
On Wednesday, Industry CS Betty Maina flagged off trucks carrying the hospital beds at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park.
Fourteen counties are set to benefit from this first batch of 170 ICU beds with urgent demand, as part of ongoing efforts to build the capacity of health facilities countrywide.
Interior PS Karanja Kibicho the other counties will share out the remaining 330, which will be delivered progressively.
The purchase of the beds is a vital boost to public hospitals that are currently overwhelmed by the huge number of patients seeking admission.
