Nine employees of the Kisumu County Inspectorate Department, who were filmed dragging a woman hawker from the back of a pick-up have been arrested.
Victor Odiyo Ochieng, Kevin Omondi, George Otieno Nyonje, Paul Ochieng Agai, Faith Akoth Okumu, Martin Olwa Nyagoi, Japhet Odero, Vincent Otieno Okeyo and Josphat Rowa will be arraigned at the Kisumu Law Courts today on assault charges.
The victim, Beatrice Magolo, had made a report at the Kisumu Police Station under OB 35/24/03/2021. Police say the nine were arrested following the conclusion of investigations into the incident. The motor vehicle involved in the incident was also seized by police.
In the incident, filmed and first broadcast by TV47 Digital, Beatrice is seen hanging on to dear life from the tail gate of a speeding pick-up that bears the registration of the Kisumu County government. A group of visibly angry bodaboda riders follow the vehicle in an attempt to rescue the woman.
The mother of four said she was selling her wares at Angawa Street near Kisumu Bus Park when the said Askaris pounced on her.
The video evoked a huge public outcry. Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o suspended the Askaris and ordered an investigation into the incident. “As investigations continue on this matter with the urgency it deserves, I have directed the City Manager to immediately suspend from duty all the officers who were involved in this incident with immediate effect,” Nyon’go said in a statement.
