President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Cabinet Administrative Secretaries and all government executive officials to take the COVID-19 vaccine to as an example to other Kenyans.
The Chief Of Staff in the Office of The President Nzioka Waita announcing the Presidential directive, shared a photo of himself on Twitter taking the vaccine.
“As the Government scales up the roll out of the national #COVID19Vaccine program , H.E the President has directed his entire Cabinet & Executive Office to lead by example & get the jab! Received mine this morning under the watchful guidance of the @MOH_Kenya vaccination team,” Waita said.
The announcement comes a day after the Ministry of Health (MoH) urged leaders within the political, religious and community levels to take up the Astrazeneca jab as a boost of public confidence in it.
“The Ministry calls upon all political, religious and community leaders to take the vaccine so as to boost confidence in the overall vaccination process among vaccination target groups,” MoH said in a statement.
The Ministry, raising concern over the surge in COVID-19 infections, also added persons aged 58 years and above in the target group of Phase I vaccination exercise.
“According to our data these are at most risk of severe disease and account for 60% of our recorded deaths,” MoH said.
Coincidentally, President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to address the nation today on the way forward as the country grapples with a COVID-19 third wave.
According to MoH, Nairobi has a positivity rate of about 57%.
Several Executive officials have began going public about their vaccination uptake.
