Two middle-aged women have been arrested in Nairobi for allegedly staging a false kidnapping.
Clare Muthoni and Diana Wanjiku allegedly tried to extort Ksh30,000 from Jane Wamuyu, Muthoni’s mother.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives say Muthoni sent her mother a flurry of text messages in the pretext that they were from kidnappers who had “seized” her. All the while, she and Diana were holed up at a pub in Misiani village, Kangudo, Machakos County, enjoying their favourite tipple.
“She (Wamuyu), was informed that her daughter Clare Muthoni had been kidnapped and her captors were demanding a ransom of 30,000 Shillings to secure her release,” says DCI, “‘Failure to which, her throat would be slit open'”. The messages were accompanied by a photo of Muthoni, her hands and legs tied, purportedly shaken. A sharp kitchen knife was thrown in for good measure, which was ostensibly for slitting open the throat.
But the only thing that was opened was a police file when Wamuyu reported the alleged kidnapping at Karen Police Station. “Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau immediately took over the matter. Their intelligence led investigations, led them to Misiani village in Kangudo. After laying their ambush, anticipating to pounce on the kidnappers, they found out that there were no kidnappers other than Muthoni who was at a local Bar. Accompanied by a friend identified as Diana Wanjiku, they had taken up residence at Website Bar, after escaping from Nyeri where they both lived.”
DCI alleges Muthoni had “hatched the plan to stage her own kidnapping, then demand a ransom from her own mother, ostensibly to secure her release.”
Both Muthoni and Diana (who is said to have been the photographer in the script) are in lawful custody awaiting arraignment.
