In what the world will interpret as “following through the footsteps of his predecessor”, Tanzania’s new president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on Sunday ordered the suspension of the head of the ports authority.
President Suluhu Hassan suspended Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Director General Deusdedit Kakoko over corruption allegations.
The TPA was adversely mentioned in 2019-2020 Controller and Auditor-General report involving the disappearance of at least Sh3.6 billion (KSh171,132,000) at the authority.
Speaking in Dodoma after receiving the audit report, President Hassan gave all the indication that in respect of corruption at least, she will emulate late President John Pombe Magufuli’s tough stance.
“I would like to assure you that I will be very firm in the collection and expenditure of public funds,” she said. “I will also stand firm against all corrupt practices. I now order the suspension of the TPA director-general to pave way for investigations into the embezzlement.”
Suluhu Hassan served as late President Magufuli’s vice president since 2015, and was sworn in as President on March 19 after the death of Magufuli.
Although she cuts a soft-spoken, cool and motherly figure, observers have been keen to see if she will continue with her predecessor’s ‘abrasive’ kind of leadership.
Tanzania’s first female head of state also directed the auditor general and the state’s anti-corruption agency to conduct a special audit of funds disbursed to development projects this year.
