Tanzanian police announced Tuesday that forty-five (45) people were killed in a stampede during the public viewing of late President John Pombe Magufuli’s body at Uhuru Stadium in Dar- es- Salaam on March 21, 2021.
Thirty-seven more people were injured as the mourners attempted to force their way into the stadium to pay last respects to their departed president.
“These people were not criminals. They went to the stadium to express their love for their departed leader but because the number of people was huge, some became impatient and opted to use unofficial entry points to get into the stadium,” Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander Lazaro Mambosasa said.
On March 25, 2021, five members of the same family were buried after being trampled on at the funeral procession of the late Magufuli at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The five include a mother and her two children. The late president Magufuli was buried a day later at his home in Chato, Northern Tanzania.
His vice president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, was sworn in to take over as president for the remainder of the term.
