The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to declare Abdikadir Haji, son of the late Yusuf Haji, as the new Senator for Garissa County.
Only Mr Haji, popularly known as Abdul, submitted nomination papers for the seat by the March 30 deadline. Yusuf, the father, died at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, on February 15.
Immediately after his death, elders from Garissa endorsed Abdul for the seat. They cited his bravely in the 2013 Westgate Mall terror attacks when he went in the line of fire to rescue several people.
The Garissa senatorial by-election was scheduled for May 18. Since no other candidate expressed interest in the seat, there will be no by-election.
“After receiving the nomination papers from only one aspirant, I have forwarded the information to IEBC headquarters for the commission to make a determination,” Garissa County IEBC Returning Officer Hussein Gure is quoted by the ‘Nation’ as saying.
When sworn in, Abdul will join the ranks of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Amani National Congress boss Musalia Mudavadi – leaders who’ve been elected unopposed in a by-election. Following the death of MP Joseph Ngugi in 2014, Kuria sprinted into parliament after his challenger Kiarie Kamere abandoned the race. In 1989, Mudavadi succeeded his father Moses Mudavadi in Sabatia constituency.
