Shock and desperation has engulfed a family in Kandara sub county, Murang’a county, after a mysterious fire razed their home, and destroyed food and livestock.
Philomena Muthoni says they could not salvage anything in the 2:30am, despite summoning for help from neighbours.
“I got alarmed when I heard the cows mooing. I checked, only to find my son’s house on fire. It was spreading from the rooftop to the chicken coop and the pigsty,” Muthoni told TV47, forlornly.
The inferno razed three houses to the ground. Recently-harvested food crop, and livestock was also destroyed. She puts the loss at more than KSh1.8 million.
Muthoni suspects a longstanding land tussle may have been the cause of fire. for a while.
“In the course of a previous dispute, we buried our sister on this land but we were forced to exhume her body and bury it elsewhere after ‘others’ claimed ownership,” a family member said.
The family now wants police to get to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
“We urge the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI), chief, sub chief and other party privy to this incident to help us unravel the perpetrators behind this inhuman act,” the family said.
It is said that petrol was used to torch the homestead as its smell was easily noticeable.
