On April 3, at 6:49pm, a Chinese national only identified as “Mr Luo” reported at Kangema Police Station, Murang’a County, that one of his company’s tipper trucks had been stolen.
The tipper, Registration Number KDA 231J, was yellow-golden in colour and belonged to CCEC Construction Company. It had been missing since the previous night from a construction site. But unbeknown to the thieves, the truck had been fitted with a tracker.
Police immediately swung into action. That night – April 3, they traced its signal to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Samburu County. The lorry was apparently headed for Marsabit. Police erected a road block along the Isiolo-Marsabit highway and intercepted it.
Three suspects namely Gibson Kariuki Wainaina, 31, Daniel Kariuki Mwangi, 48, and Simon Kamau Gathinga, 45 were arrested. They are currently being held at Laisamis Police Station pending transfer to Kangema Police Station, whereupon they will start the process of answering charges for theft.
