Kikuyu Benga artist Albert Gacheru Kiarie is dead.
The “Mwendwa wakwa mariru” hitmaker died at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi after battling a long illness.
It is said that the 59-year-old has been in ICU for the last two months until his demise on Monday evening at 9pm.
Born in Gathaji Nyandarua, Gacheru’s popular hit song Mumunya was his first ever record in 1987.
Gacheru was also a reknowned producer in the 90s with a recording label, Wamaitu Productions, which recorded popular artists like The Late Queen Jane and John De Mathew but later left the business after his studio was arsoned on 10th February 1999.
Gacheru also adds up to be a Lawyer with a Bachelor’s Degree LLB from Mt Kenya University(2015) and has being pushing for copyright laws and reforms in the country to protect local artists.
