Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has announced that a committee of experts shall be formed to conduct research and advise the goverment on the state of COVID-19 in the country.
Speaking on Tuesday during the swearing-in of various leaders at State House in Dar es Salaam, President Suluhu said that her government needed to assess Tanzania’s COVID-19 state before introducing any measures.
“On matters COVID-19, I intend to form a committee of experts that will expansively assess our national COVID-19 state and advise my government accordingly. We should not ignore this matter.
“The experts will report on the severity of the virus. As a country, we cannot just isolate ourselves like an island without conducting our own research into the matter,” President Suluhu said.
Suluhu further said that the report from the local experts shall determine whether Tanzania shall follow the global COVID-19 management protocols or otherwise.
President Suluhu’s latest move on the global pandemic is a stark contrast to her predecessor, late President John Pombe Magufuli.
The late Magufuli played down the threat of COVID-19 and even said that God and remedies such as steam inhalation would protect Tanzanians.
At some point, Magufuli mocked coronavirus tests, narrating how a pawpaw fruit tested positive for the novel virus.
During his last days, President Magufuli denounced COVID-19 vaccines as part of a Western conspiracy, advising Africans not to take the jabs blindly.
