A family in Area Forty in Githurai, Nairobi County is pleading for justice in a case of defilement against their child.
Grace, 11,- not her real name-, is said to have been defiled on February 1, 2021, by an elderly man well known to her. She had been sent away from school over lack of fees.
Grace reveals that she and her friends were fond of the man, calling him ‘Guka’ (grandafther). Guka promised to pay her school fees and buy her sugarcane.
He tricked her by inviting her to his house, “to pick the Panga for peeling off the sugarcane, and collect the money.”
Inside his house, Grace recounts, Guka laid her on the bed, stripped her naked and defiled her.
After not knowing her whereabouts for sometime, Grace’s sister and friends went on her trail. They caught Guka red-handed, just buckling up after his dastardly act.
After raising an alarm, Guka was apprehended by officers from Kiuu Police Station and thrown into Industrial Area Remand Prison. Meanwhile, she had hid Grace under the bed.
Confident that this was an open-and-shut case, backed up by a medical report confirming the defilement, Grace’s mother was shocked on the day of the arraignment (March 24, 2021) when the suspect failed to appear in court.
“Our case was called twice, with the suspect failing to appear even after waiting for sometime. The investigating officer said his case file was missing, and shortly after, that he was not at the prison either,” Grace’s mother said.
Grace’s mother further reveals that the suspect’s employer had tried talking her into dropping the charges before the day of arraignment.
“His employer told me that he would give me a certain amount of money so that we could drop the charges. He even told me that the man would leave for upcountry so that no one would ever know about the matter,” she said.
The family now alleges that they are yet to get another hearing date, putting their quest for justice in jeopardy.
