Police in Maralal, Samburu County, have launched a manhunt for a male nurse who had married a Class Eight pupil as his second wife.
Phillip Lenmerdete, 48, who works at a local health centre in Lodekojek village, married the 13-year-old school girl, taking her into his home.
Confirming the incident, Samburu Central Sub-County Police Commander Sylvester Rotich said the teenager had just completed her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education(KCPE) examinations.
Rotich said that the village chief was the one who rescued the girl after he was tipped off by locals.
“The girl was rescued and was taken to the Suguta Rescue Centre where she is being taken care of as we continue looking for the nurse,” Rotich said.
As if aware of the consequences he would face for his actions, Lenmerdete reportedly fled when he saw the chief approaching his house, and has since been on the lose.
Rotich warned parents in the area against forcing their children into early marriages, insisting, “it is very disappointing that an educated member of the society is marrying a 13-year-old girl. Parents and residents should be vigilant and stop this from happening.”
He further urged the locals to provide any information privy to the matter in order to help arrest the nurse as soon as possible.
