A journalist with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has been shot dead at her home in Ololua, Ngong, Kajiado County.
Betty Barasa was a video editor with the Harry Thuku Road-based national broadcaster. Eye witnesses say three men waylaid her as she arrived home at 8:20pm on Wednesday. They forced their way into the compound as her gate was being opened.
Her family says two of the thugs were armed with AK47 rifles. As Betty walked from her car- a Toyota Prado-, the men ordered her into the house, newly-built, and demanded for valuables.
In the meantime, Betty’s husband and their three children noticed the presence strangers. The house girl screamed and scampered into a different room. Reports indicate the gang frog-marched the journalist into her upstairs bedroom and demanded money. The other family members were left in the living room, shaken.
As they ransacked the house, with Betty pleading for her life, one of the thugs shot her at point blank range, killing her instantly. Neighbours responded to the sound of gun shots and rushed to the family’s rescue. The thugs snatched the journalist’s laptop and mobile phone and fled. Police arrived later at the scene and collected a spent cartridge.
Betty’s body was moved to Montenzuma Monalisa Funeral Home.
“We were with her in the office yesterday,” said Aisha, one of her KBC colleagues. “She was jovial and charming as usual. Condolences to her family.”
