Lawrence Warunge, a prime suspect in the murder of four family members and their farmhand has pleaded not guilty to five counts of murder charges on Thursday, April 15 morning.
Appearing virtually before the Kiambu Law Courts, Warunge, 22, denied killing the five people, months after he allegedly confessed to homicide detectives that he killed them.
High Court Judge Mary Kasango ordered Warunge to be remanded at the Industrial Area Prisons awaiting the pre-trial for the murder case on May 11, 2021.
This comes two days after he was declared fit to stand trial by the Matahri Mental Hospital.
While confessing to the murders, Warunge reportedly said that he drew inspiration from the movie series, Killing Eve.
“He first hit on the head using a metal bar and immediately on becoming unconscious, he could stab the chest several times on each of the victims in order to damage respiratory organs,” a detective narrated their findings
Killing Eve is a series centred around the main character, Eve, tracking down a sociopath assassin with a dagger as his weapon. The weapon he used is evident enough that the inspiration came from the series.
The murders of Nicholas Warunge, his wife Ann, children Christian and Maxwell, and a farmhand James Kinyanjui captured the attention of the nation, with many wondering why a 22-year-old university student would resort to such a demonic act.
His girlfriend, Sarah Muthoni, is now a state witness in the murder case.
