DCI detectives have arrested a man in Githurai, Kiambu County, for allegedly torturing and killing his lover.
Evans Karani allegedly confessed to killing 25-year-old Catherine Nyokabi in Witeithie, Juja area on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
According to DCIO Richard Mwaura, the 38-year-old was busted on Friday after attempting to dump Nyokabi’s body, a hotel worker in Kahawa Wendani.
Mwaura revealed that Karani’s car got stuck in the mud along Bob Harris Road in Juja, as he was ferrying the body to a yet-to-be-established destination. Karani abandoned the car in the sludge, with Catherine’s body still inside.
Catherine’s body was covered in bruises on the head and burns. “Nyokabi’s body had been burnt using a corrosive chemical,” said Mwaura. “It appears she was tortured before being killed.”
Residents of Tola estate raised the alarm after spotting the abandoned car with the body inside. Police officers moved swiftly, retrieving the vehicle’s ownership details from the National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) database.
Armed with his personal information, a joint team of DCI, police officers and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau(CRIB) officers launched a manhunt for Karani. They traced his mobile phone signal to Githurai Kimbo.
Married But Secret Lover
Karani is reportedly married but Catherine was his secret lover. He told police that their relationship was going through a rough patch in the run up to the murder.
Karani is being held at the Juja Police Station as police conduct more investigations.
