Police in Nyeri have arrested a man accused of abducting and attempting to rape a girl who was heading home after completing her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCSE) examination on Monday.
According to a report filed at the Nyeri Police Station, the Gitunduti Mixed Secondary School student in Mathira, Nyeri county, was headed home in Homa Bay County, through Nairobi.
“She boarded a matatu to Nairobi with intention to connect to her home in Homa Bay County on 21/4/2021 at around 0800hrs but alighted at Kenol area after she was informed by the vehicle driver that they could not proceed to Nairobi. She subsequently boarded a Nyeri-bound matatu at around noon on 21/4/2021 so as to access Nakuru via Nyahururu route,” reads the police report.
The 2NK Sacco matatu had several stopovers along the way but she finally reached Nyeri at around 6 pm.
Driver hatches rape plan
“The driver of the matatu took her round and round within Nyeri Town in disguise of escorting her to Nakuru stage. The Matatu driver later advised the student that it would not be appropriate to travel at night and promised to assist her to get a room to sleep so as to travel on 22/4/2021 which prompted the two to exchange mobile numbers,” reveals the police report.
It was around 9 pm when the driver, 52-year-old Washington Nderitu Kamuthu, picked the student and took her to his house within the area, in disguise of escorting her to a lodging facility. The arrangement was that she would pay KSh600 for the room overnight.
But upon arrival to the said house, Kamuthu attempted to rape her. Fortunately, she was able to escape, calling 999 while hiding behind an M-Pesa shop.
Police answer to distress call
Police who responded to the girl’s distress call used her to lure the driver into their trap so that they can arrest him. She called him and the driver arrived in the same matatu to pick her up.
“The driver emerged driving the matatu and picked her as Police dashed from their covers near Riva Petrol Station and stopped the said vehicle. On sighting the Police, the driver accelerated in an attempt to hit the Police officer but the Officers responded by shooting On the front right wheel prompting the vehicle to stop.
“The driver was subsequently arrested, school uniform and other personal effects belonging to the student recovered from the vehicle.
The student then led the police officers to the house where the attempted rape happened. The scene was processed and documented as investigations kick off.
The matatu was towed to Nyeri Police Station.
