Grief and shock engulfed residents of Madala village in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, after a man allegedly killed his wife and stayed with her decomposing body inside their house for five days.
Neighbours woke up to the rude shock on Monday, April 26 after finding the body of Virginia Khavakali, 35, inside her matrimonial house. The body which had been partially burnt with a corrosive substance had multiple stab wounds.
Her 46-year-old husband Wycliffe Khamasi was found lying unconscious a few metres from the wife’s lifeless body. Police say that Khamasi drunk excess alcohol after presumably killing his wife.
According to a neighbours account, the last time they saw Khavakali was on Monday last week. After a foul smell started emanating from their house, they decised to break down Khamasi’s door.
He used to beat up the wife
“There was a time he cut off her fingers following a domestic dispute,” a neighbour told journalists of how the marriage between Khamasi and Khavakali was marred with domestic violence.
“After he cut off her fingers a few months ago, I warned my brother against assaulting his wife,” Khamasi’s sister Penina Khatunyi told The Standard. “I’m now shocked to learn he has killed her.”
Khavakali’s body was removed to Kakamega Funeral Parlour. After he was stabilised, Khamasi was taken to Shinyalu Police Station.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the couple was not legally married. Khamasi had inherited the mother of two after her former husband died two years ago.
