Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has been arrested.
Senator Linturi was arrested on Wednesday afternoon while on his way to Parliament.
According to Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, Linturi was arrested by men who introduced themselves as police officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“I received a distress call from my colleague Senator Mithika Linturi. This afternoon on his way to Parliament, he was stopped by gentlemen who claimed to be police officers from DCI. He says he is headed to DCI headquarters and he doesn’t understand why he has been arrested,” Senator Cheruiyot told Senate.
Mithika’s arrest comes as the bicameral house (National Assembly and Senate) is expected to debate on the BBI Bill report.
Senators slam Linturi’s arrest
Vihiga Senator George Khaniri slammed his colleague’s arrest, vowing not to participate in the special sessions this afternoon and tomorrow.
“If Senator Linturi has been arrested in the course of duty, we should all leave this chamber. It’s not fair. It is unacceptable to arrest a lawmaker in the middle of proceedings.
It doesn’t matter what he believes in, this is supposed to be a chamber of debates, this is not a choir where we are supposed to agree or sing the same song. People are supposed to debate,” said Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr.
Consequently, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka suspended Senate sittings for 30 minutes.
“Because of the gravity of the matter and what has been requested, I am suspending the House for 30 minutes, during which time I will use to find out what exactly has happened,” ruled Speaker Lusaka.
