Thieves broke into Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Ngecha, Kiambu County, and stole a copper-bell weighing 500kg.
James Warari, church Organizing Secretary, says the theft happened last week.
“We were informed that there had been an incident at the church and when we got there we confirmed that indeed, thieves had broken down the doors at the church and stolen the church bell,” Warari said. The church reported the theft at Ngecha Police Station.
Villagers and some of the church members were left speculating as how the thieves intend to use the bell. More so, how they transported the heavy bell.
They are now urging the local administration and area police to help them get the bell back and ensure perpetrators are brought to book.
There has been a rise in the spate of thefts targeting places of worship in recent past.
In January this year, St. Monica Catholic church, the local branch of Seventh Day Adventist, Worldwide Ministries, Legio Maria and Otamba PAG, all in Kisii County were torched.
On April 19, 2021, a gang broke into a PAG church in Lurambi, Kakamega county and stole several items including vestments.
