A dramatic first-half saw Roma make three changes with first one coming four minutes before United’s opening goal through Bruno Fernandes. As Roma reacted quickly and fired back from the spot when Lorenzo Pellegrini converted a penalty that resulted from a Paul Pogba handball.
Former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko fired the visitors into the lead two minutes after the half-hour mark. Trailing by halftime, United responded in the best way possible when Edinson Cavani equalized in the 51st minute.
United’s Easy Tap
The Uruguayan international then restored United’s lead with an easy tap in when substitute keeper Antonio Mirante pushed Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s angled shot into his path.
Fernandes’ penalty, Pogba’s superb finish and Mason Greenwood’s fantastic delivery ensured that United became the first team to score six goals in a major European semi-final since Real Madrid in the European Cup, May, 1964.
It looks like an already done-and-dusted tie even as the teams prep for second leg in Rome next week.
Elsewhere, Arsenal suffered a first-leg loss when Spanish side Villarreal crushed them 2-1 in the second semi final of the Europa league. Villarreal took a 2-0 first half advantage through Manuel Trigueros and Raul Albiol before Arsenal record signing Pepe pulled one back from the penalty spot in the second-half.
Arsenal will now welcome Villarreal on May 8,2021 in search of the Finals ticket.
