Reports indicate that the girls aged 15 and 17 were kidnapped by two men identified only as “Mashaa” and “Dave” wielding machetes along the Maragua border.
Maragua-based police officers responded swiftly and found the men with the girls, who remained adamant when asked to surrender.
Dave reportedly charged at the officers with his machete. He was shot on his left leg, falling just a metres from the officers.
His counterpart fled into the darkness. Officers rushed his partner-in-crime to Maragua Hospital. One of the girls who sustained a machete wound on her left arm in the tussle was also treated.
The girl was later discharged and alongside her would-be kidnap victim, recorded statements at Maragua Police Station.
Police are in pursuit of the suspect who run away. The criminal duo will be arraigned in court in due course, police say.
