Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) rangers in collaboration with the Kenya Police rescued three boys who got lost for four days inside Mt Kenya Forest.
Anthony Muhoro,17, Jackson Karuri,17, and David Mukoma 20 were on a hiking adventure in the forest when they lost direction and could not get their way back home. The three went missing on May 4, 2021. They were in the company of their dogs.
Muhoro is a Form Three student at Gitunduti Secondary School, Karuri is also a Form Three at Ihwagi Secondary School while Kinyua is a student at Nyeri National Polytechnic.
After two days of absence, the parents reported the case to Karatina Police Station, with locals in collaboration with the police mounting a search.
After days of futile search, the police deployed a helicopter and teamed up with KWS rangers to comb the forest.
Fortunately, the police found the three boys after several trips to and from the forest by helicopter. Also found were the two dogs which were with the students.
They thank God for surviving in Mt Kenya Forest
Muhoro has thanked God for their miraculous survival without food and other basic needs for four days. “It was by the grace of God that we survived for four days without food and other necessities. We thought we were going to die and kept praying.”
According to Muhoro, their adventure went south when they found themselves deep into the dense wood.
“We entered the forest through Ragati gate. Hours later, we found ourselves deep into the dense woods. I don’t know how far it was from the edges of the forest but we were exhausted. We could not even tell the time since it was constantly dark. That is when panic set in. We literally groped in the dark after losing our way back home, ” he added.
Phones lost signal inside Mt Kenya forest
To rub salt in the wound, all their phones lost signal making it difficult to communicate with their kins. As a result, they trekked towards the edge of the forest in an attempt to find their way back home.
The three survived on wild fruits and waters despite the dangers attached to it during their three dreadful days. This is because they had not carried any food with them.
Luckily, on their third day in the forest, the three met some police officers and forest rangers who summoned the rest of the search party.
