Inspector General (IG) of police Hilary Mutyambai has called for immediate investigations into allegations of unfair treatment and sexual harassment made by a Mombasa female police officer.
The woman, who was not named, released a video requesting for permission to depart from the force. The 2:20-minute long clip went viral. She said her numerous resignation letters were yet to reach to the IG.
“Sir, kindly allow me to resign peacefully from the police officer post because I can thrive elsewhere. Even if it means, resigning without pay, I will not mind,” she says in the video.
She added that frustrations in the police force were the root cause of police brutality and extra-judicial killings.
“I just want a chance to resign peacefully. I have attached several letters meant for the IG but they never get to him. That is why police officers get frustrated to a point of committing suicide or killing themselves, something I cannot do,” she ranted, adding: “You have frustrated me. I am a woman and I am being disrespected, we have problems here. One day someone will fight for us the weak.”
Mutyambai swings into action
Confirming that the said officer is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa County, IG Mutyambai directed the Gender and Children Directorate department to independently investigate the matter and present a report to him within seven days.
“I have learnt of a video trending on social media where a female Police Officer is captured lamenting against unfair treatment and sexual harassment. The officer is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa County.
She had complained against a merchant hence subjected to an inquiry by @DCI_Kenya officers resulting into a departmental action. I have directed the Gender and Children Directorate to independently investigate the matter and give a report within 7 days,” said Mutyambai.
