Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai has ordered for the arrest and prosecution of people captured on video forcefully dragging a man on the ground in Kwale County.
In the video, Kaskazi Resort General Manager Chris Indeche is seen being dragged on the ground by close to 10 people. The resort is in Ukunda, Kwale County.
“The [IG] has ordered the Regional Police Commander-Coast Region to immediately arrest all the perpetrators of the offence and arraign them before a court. Nobody is above the law and such acts of impunity will be met with the full force of the law,” says the National Police Service.
Over 40 workers of the hotel accosted Indeche on May 6, 2021 demanding pay.
“Some employees suddenly appeared at my table and surrounded me. They were demanding their salaries and I informed them that the hotel owners had assured me they would pay them once funds are available but they did not listen,” Indeche told a local publication.
Indeche says that business has been low in recent months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Myself I have not received my pay.” He claims that in the kerfuffle, the workers took from him KSh25,000 and an iPhone 8. The disgruntle workers also allegedly broke into his room and threw out his personal belongings.
Indeche reported the assault to Diani Police Station, leading to arrest of one of the workers. He was later released under unclear circumstances.
