A cow in Kihingo village, Kiambu is the talk of town after giving birth to three healthy calves.
The owner of the Friesian cow discovered that she had given birth to the triplets on Thursday morning when he went to milk other cows. He was met with a nice surprise as the cow had delivered on her own without assistance.
A veterinarian Fredric Karia, who gave the cow artificial insemination (AI), says that the Holstein-Friesian cow is one of a kind as he has never seen an animal give birth to three calves unassisted.
“For the many years I have inseminated cows, I have never seen a cow give birth to three calves unassisted. The semen is imported from the US, which I have used on other cows. I have, however, not seen other cows give birth to either twins or triplets,” Karia said.
More Calves Possible
Karia, however, says that if an cow is well fed, capabilities of producing more than one calf are there.
“I always advise farmers to use AI since one would save the cow from many diseases and one is sure that the breed that is going to be sired will produce a lot of milk.”
One of the neighbours, Joseph Kihara, says it is a blessing to the farmer for his cow to give birth to three healthy female calves. Kihara has also noted that the village has never witnessed such an incident.
“I have never heard a cow giving birth to triplets and it is a blessing since the calves are all healthy and are heifers,” Kihara said.
