Police in Kisumu town have arrested a 63-year-old woman for being in possession of mosquito nets believed to have been stolen from Rabuor and Nyangande hospitals.
Mary Awino Ohala was seized from her house at USAID estate with 19 bales of treated nets. Each bale contained 50 pieces.
Kisumu County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu said officers from Obunga Police Station were acting on a tip-off from members of the public.
Mosquito Nets’ Mystery
With the current value of each net being KSh400, the whole package is valued at KSh380,000. Police believe the nets are part of those donated by the Global Fund for free distribution to fight malaria. They disappeared mysteriously from the stores of the hospitals early this month.
The nets were meant to be given to the public at no cost in a recently-launched malaria-fighting drive that is targeting 1.2 million residents.
Police had previously arrested the senior officers in charge of the two hospitals when the theft was discovered.
Anampiu says Ohala will be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
