Atheists in Kenya Society (AIKS) Secretary Seth Mahiga has resigned.
In a statement posted last evening, AIKS founder and president Harrison Mumia says Mahiga’s “reason for resigning is that he has found Jesus Christ and is no longer interested in promoting atheism in Kenya.”
Seth had served in the position for one and a half years. In his Twitter profile, Mahiga identifies himself as a member of Bunge La Mwananchi, a civil society movement.
“We wish Seth all the best in his new found relationship with Jesus Christ. We thank him for having served the society with dedication over the last one and a half years,” says Mumia. “The position of secretary of the society has been rendered vacant. We are calling upon Kenyan atheists who would wish to join our Executive Committee to send their CVs.”
In a deeply religious society as Kenya, AIKS raises quite a number of eyebrows in its assertion that there is no God and no supreme being. According to the African Studies Centre, about 70% of Kenyans are Christians.
