Relatives of a patient who died at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital on Tuesday, June 1 resorted to unprecedented action as a way of accusing the facility of negligence.
After their kin died at the hospital, the family decided to book the corpse in the mortuary. But the morgue attendants turned them away, refusing to preserve the remains of their loved ones.
The attendants reportedly told the family that they were on Madaraka Day holiday.
Out of anger, the relatives moved the body to the busy Kisumu-Kakamega Highway next to Equity Bank Highway, Mable town branch. As a result, there was a huge traffic snarl up, as the incident drew large crowds.
Family blames hospital over negligence
“This is my mother who is lying here, we brought her to the hospital yesterday, and she passed on, but they have refused to talk to us and are closing the gate when they see us,” one of the relatives told the media.
Police who were called to maintain law and order were forced to lob teargas to disperse the angry residents, in a bid to return the body, in a hospital stretcher, to the mortuary.
