Four children aged eight years and below were on Saturday, June 5 night rescued from a burning house in Nyatike, Migori County.
Family members living nearby were awoken by cries of the helpless children in the middle of the night. They rushed upon realising that smoke was emanating from the house.
They were able to rescue the four children unharmed, only to realise that their mother had already hanged herself using a rope.
According to area chief Jeremiah Oloo, when the family members rushed to help the kids, they realise that the 28-year-old woman had locked the house from the inside and had even blocked the door using chairs. They had to access the house through the window.
It is not yet know why the woman tried to kill her children before committing suicide. The deceased’s husband, married to two wives, had gone to spent the night in the other woman’s house.
The body of the woman has been moved to Sori Lakeside Hospital mortuary even as police launch investigations into the incident.
