Kitengela… a name that has been hitting the headlines of late, and for all the wrong reasons.
The town in Kajiado County– just some 30 kilometres from the capital Nairobi– has witnessed increased crime rate in the last six months, in what is fast becoming a haven for criminals.
Ranging from the abductions of now infamous “Kitengela Four”, robberies that have left innocent residents dead, and the recent abduction and subsequent murder of an eight-year-old girl.
Remember when seven bodies were exhumed from two shallow graves in a government-owned land back in May 2014? It was in Kitengela. All these crimes have left residents living in fear in the fast-rising human settlement area.
IG Mutyambai on the spot in Kitengela insecurity
One concerned Twitter user, @Jeff_Rubia, on Monday, June 7 asked the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai what his plans are in ensuring that the crimes are curbed in the area.
“I hope you’re aware of the rising cases of insecurity in Kitengela, especially abduction and murder. What are you doing about it? Are you considering a reshuffle/transfer of the ones in charge of security in the area?” He posed during the weekly #EngageTheIg forum.
In his response, IG Mutyambai said that police officers have been deployed to patrol in the area 24/7. The police boss also revealed that an elaborate multi-agency team of homicide detectives is working to crack the shocking murders witnessed in the area.
“We have police officers on patrol 24/7. We also have an elaborate multi-agency team comprised of a special crime prevention unit that deals with homicides. We also encourage members of the public to report to the police should they spot any unusual activity,” IG Mutyambai said.
Three months ago, a decomposed body of a popular mechanic in Kitengela town was found buried in a shallow grave.
All these incidences are still active cases that are yet to be resolved.
Kajiado County Police Commander Muthuri Mwongera says security agents are working tirelessly to ensure that sanity is restored in the area.
