A Form One student from Murray Girls’ High School met her untimely death on Monday evening in a road accident along the Taveta-Voi Road.
The student was travelling back to school after the mid-term break and was in the company of several others in the 14-seater matatu.
The student perished as she was being rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi by the passers-by.
Confirming the incident, Charles Baraza, the Taveta Police Commander, said that the accident occurred when the matatu driver veered off sharply to avoid hitting an elephant.
The matatu lost control and rolled off the Taveta-Voi road before coming to a stop on the opposite side.
Three others, who were also students, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Coast General Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Nine other students who sustained minor injuries were treated in Voi and discharged.
