A family in Nairobi is crying for justice after their kin, a motorcycle enthusiast, was allegedly killed in an accident involving a senior official of the road safety authority.
Barbara Wangari says her brother Victor Munene, 31, collided with the senior National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) official on May 6, 2021, along Kiambu Road. The accident happened near the Muthaiga North turning.
“Victor was on his way home. The NTSA director was overlapping, overspeeding meters away from a junction,” she writes. Robert Ndegwa Ngugi, senior deputy director of legal services at NTSA, was subsequently arrested and charged in court on June 2. He was accused of causing death by dangerous driving, contrary to Section 46 of the Traffic Act.
Ngugi was released on KSh100,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of KSh400,000.
How Accident Occurred
Wangari claims the motorist “came onto Victor’s path, colliding with him at a speed that threw him over the car and caused extensive body injuries.”
She says her brother always rode with a GoPro camera mounted on his helmet (for recording) but “.. it mysteriously disappeared immediately after the accident.”
“Are NTSA employees required to abide by the highway code like other motorists and road users? Are my taxes being used to pay the salary of a person who killed my brother?” she poses.
Victor was an avid biker and photos of him depict him at various places with his machine. Barbara, distraught, highlights the dangers bikers face on our roads. “Whenever a person chooses to be a motorcyclist or cyclist in this country, their family has to live in constant fear and worry for their lives.. if the road safety authorities did their job this wouldn’t happen.”
Victor was the director of Regulus Limited. He was reportedly headed for Ongata Rongai when the accident happened. Besides Barbara, he had another sibling Timothy Miano. He was buried on May 13.
