Six people were on Saturday afternoon, June 12 killed and several others badly injured after two rival groups of herders in Isiolo County engaged in a fierce gun battle.
A group of herders from Leruko village in Kipsing reportedly drove their cattle and goats to a drinking point within Buffalo Springs Game Reserve at the Isiolo River.
Another group from Ngaremara location then laid an ambush, with intention to steal the animals, something that led to the exchange of gunfire.
Confirming the incident, County Commander Joseph Kigen said that six people were killed in the two-hour gun battle.
Isiolo County Commissioner Herman Shambi says that preliminary investigations have revealed that one group was in a rustling mission.
The national reserve is under the management of the Isiolo County Government. It is a Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) protected area.
The county’s department of tourism is in the process of evicting herders who have invaded the park that lacks a perimetre fence.
The bodies have been moved to Isiolo County Referral Hospital.
