In the Thursday evening incident that unfolded like a movie, three suspects including Jackson Mulinge Mueke and Augustus Nzioka Ndeto trailed Veronica Kwanza Kiilu and her 72-year-old husband Wellington Kioko to a local bank in the town.
According to police report, the couple reportedly withdrew KSh500,000 from the bank before parting ways.
“KSh150,000 of the funds were used to pay a Machakos-based lawyer for an unspecified assignment,” part of the report reads.
Veronica then headed to board a matatu to Kaloleni, her residence, while her husband stayed to finish some errands.
She borded a motorbike to take her home. However, they had barely moved 200 metres when a speeding Toyota Axio of registration number KCH 348S blocked their way.
In a flash, the gang took away the elderly woman and blindfolded her.
“They bundled her into the back seat of the getaway car and sped off, towards Muthwani shopping centre,” the report states.
The gang allegedly stole the remaining KSh350,000 she had with her, before abandoning her and fleeing.
Suspects nabbed by locals
By that time, word of the incident had spread fast, and angry group of motorbike riders trailed the vehicle and intercepted the criminals as they approached Ndovoini.
The angry mob dragged the suspects out of the car and began roughing them up.
Two of them succumbed to the injuries from the blows, kicks and stones pelted at them. The third managed to escape.
Detectives who rushed to the scene retrieved two walkie-talkies and three mobile phones believed to belong to the suspects.
An identity card belonging to one Katu Nzalu was also recovered, which detectives suspected belonged to the suspect who escaped. A search for him is underway.
