A man in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, went berserk after a paternity row with his wife, stabbing his two children before turning the knife on himself.
Ken Mburu had reportedly doubted he was the father of his youngest child, aged one. He demanded for a DNA test. Narrating the incident which took place at Ziwani estate, Mburu’s mother is said to have confronted him, “Why do you want a DNA test yet they look like you?”
Incensed, Mburu threatened to “finish off” his family and burn down the house. His mother initially took it as a vain threat.
One of the eye witnesses at the scene said the man seized his wife and held a knife to her throat. “His wife managed to escape after her shirt tore and she slipped from his grip. She ran out and closed the gate.”
Mburu allegedly trained his anger on the children, stabbing them multiple times. He then set the house on fire by unplugging the gas cooker system and retreated to the bedroom. Mburu attempted suicide by stabbing himself several times.
Neighbours who spotted the fire alerted the police.
Area Assistant Chief Mary Kimani said Mburu was rescued by officers from an irate mob baying for his blood. He is in custody as he receives treatment. The minors are recuperating at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
He will reportedly be charged with attempted murder, attempted suicide and arson.
In a bizarre twist of events, the county fire brigade vehicle rushing to the scene was involved in an accident while attempting to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle.
