Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, a close ally to Deputy President William Ruto, is eyeing the Kilifi County gubernatorial seat in 2022.
Jumwa revealed part of her “dream team” at a social event in Kilifi last Sunday. Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, Juliet Baya aka “Kachachawa” who is eyeing the Kilifi Woman representative post and Kilifi County Chief Officer of Publics Work, Kenneth Charo Kazungu aka “Tungule” are in the team. Charo is expected to vie for the Ganze MP seat.
“The people I have mentioned are those with whom we have sat down, discussed and agreed that we are all set for the 2022 General Elections,” she said in a speech that was mostly in Giriama dialect.
Jumwa, who initially served as Kilifi Woman Representative (2013-2017), is yet to announce her favoured senatorial aspirant claiming that no politician has asked her for support. The seat is currently held by ODM’S Stewart Madzayo.
Baya, who had initially showed interest in the seat, back tracked a few weeks ago to give support to MS Jumwa.
The two are among ODM legislators who rebelled against party leader Raila Odinga and gravitated towards DP Ruto’s camp.
At the Sunday event, Baya reiterated his support for Jumwa.
“I want them to know that it’s too late. All is set. It is William Samoei Ruto for president our governor will be Aisha Jumwa and I will be the MP of Kilifi North. We want to make sure that Kilifi will rise. Ours is a strong team,” he said.
Jumwa is likely to compete against incumbent governor Amason Kingi’s deputy Gideon Saburi, Lands CAS Gideon Mung’aro and Magarini MP Michael Kingi.
