A police officer is being held at the Chuka Police Station for allegedly robbing an M-Pesa agent of KSh9,000.
According to a police report, Julius Oduor Ayieko who is attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) had gone to an M-Pesa shop in Chuka town requesting to withdraw some money.
While the shop attendant, identified as Maureen Kanana, was serving the officer, he reportedly managed to access the shop through the back door and stole KSh9,000.
“The CIPU officer entered the kiosk through the back door and robbed M-Pesa agent Maureen Kanana cash amounting to KSh9,000, and upon trying to shout, he showed her a rifle,” a police statement reads in part.
The officer was cornered by members of the public who responded to the scene after Kanana raised alarm by screaming.
“Police officers rushed to the scene and rescued the accused who was later identified as No. 259545 AP Constable Julius Oduor Ayieko CIPU officer attached to Embu West Sub-county armed with scopion s/no. KE AP C239003 loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition of 9mm,” the statement adds.
One handcuff was retrieved from the scene which had no serial number on it.
The suspect is being held at Chuka Police Station, waiting to be arraigned in court.
