Karen DCI officer who collapsed, died at a party was accused of bigamy

Chief Inspector Anne Wanjiru Waiganjo, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation died on Saturday evening, July 3.

She collapsed at a colleague’s farewell party at Baita Restaurant, Upperhill. “She was rushed to Nairobi Hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival,” says a police report.

She was accused of bigamy

Waiganjo, who was in-charge of DCI Karen had been accused of bigamy – the offense of marrying someone else while legally married – an offence that attracts a sentence of up to five years in prison.

It is reported that Waiganjo got married to David Mbitu Muchia, a prisons officer, on April 4, 2009 at Full Gospel Church in Njoro, Nakuru County. A year later, they are said to have separated.

In 2012, she got married to David Murimi, an inspector in the police who also holds a lower rank than hers, at the Attorney General’s office. It was her divorce case with Murimi that went public. While filing for divorce, the DCIO – in court papers – said that the “marriage is entirely loveless and irretrievably broken down”.

Murimi, in turn, accused her of bigamy. “She had already contracted another marriage with David Mbitu Muchia, a prisons officer, on April 4, 2009 at Full Gospel Church, Njoro Town, Nakuru County,” Murimi said in court documents.

Waiganjo, however, refuted these claims saying that her first marriage never existed.
