Brazil star Neymar Jr. says his wish is to face Argentina in the finals of Copa America.
After his team edged out Peru 1-0 in a nail-biting semi-final, the PSG forward thundered, “I want Argentina in the final. I am cheering for them because I have many friends there. In the final, Brazil will win.”
Argentina is set to play Colombia in the other semi-final tomorrow, to decide who will face Brazil at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio De Janeiro, on Saturday.
The lone goal in the first semi-final held at Nilton Santos Stadium, Rio, came in the 34th minute. Neymar dribbled past three Peru defenders on the left edge of the box to set up Lucas Paquetá, who just pushed the ball to the back of the net.
Peru pressed for a second-half equalizer, with Gianluca Lapadula testing Ederson with a fierce effort, but they failed to upstage the hosts.
Neymar has been involved in five goals so far for Brazil in five appearances at the competition. Since making his international debut in August 2010,he has scored 68 goals in 109 international appearances. He is the country’s second all-time top scorer behind Pelé.
Last year, he surpassed Ronaldo’s tally of 62 goals with a hat-trick in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Peru.
The nine-time champions have won the Copa America every time they’ve hosted the tournament.
