ODM Leader Raila Odinga now says that he is only interested in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s vote and not his endorsement in the 2022 presidential race.
“I do not need anyone’s endorsement. I’m not after President Uhuru’s endorsement. I only want his vote,” Odinga said in an interview at a local station.
Recently, the former prime minister hinted at vying for the 2022 presidency, saying that he would root out corrupt leaders should he assume power.
“Sisi tukishika hatamu ya utawala hawa wezi wataingia ndani wote, na pesa ya taifa tutaweka kwa upande ya wataifa kwa njia ya maendeleo,” Odinga said.
During the Thursday interview, however, Odinga shunned digging into matters corruption. “Nimepokea wito kwamba nisizungumzie mambo ya ufisadi. Hiyo ni hujuma. Kama watu hawataki nizungumzie kuhusu ufasidi, basi haina maana kabisa. Lazima tukomeshe wizi wa mali ya umma.”
With the 2022 elections fast approaching, various NASA principals have ‘vowed’ not to support Raila again, even insisting that “he pay up his debt and support one of us”. Odinga, however, maintains that he would not be tied down by people’s expectations.
“Mimi sijawahi kusema kuwa nina risasi moja. Mimi sijakataa kumuunga yeyote kuwania urais. Lakini, tulipoenda mawindoni, tulirejea bila chochote,” the ODM Leader said.
With regards to coalition talks ahead of next year’s polls, Odinga said talks were in progress. “NASA ulikuwa tu muungano. Haukuwa chama. Vyama tanzu vina haki ya kujiandaa kivyao. Mazungumzo ya miungano kwa sasa ni mazoezi,” Odinga explained.
