A woman mistaken to be Carol Kangogo, the fugitive police officer being hunted over the murder of two people, has been shot and wounded in Kiminini.
Phanice Chemutai Juma is recuperating at Kitale county Referral Hospital following an incident where a Kitale-based businessman shot her on the lower left abdomen at Kiminini market last night.
According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng’, Ken Muyundo a businessman in the hospitality industry who is also a licensed firearm holder shot Chemutai shortly after meeting her on suspicion that she was Kangogo. Kangogo is alleged to have shot and killed constable John Ongweno in Nakuru and Peter Ndwiga Njiru in Juja.
“Ken Muyundo met the lady sometimes back and exchanged contacts, thereafter the lady has been calling him insisting that they should meet. Yesterday at around 9:30PM, Ken met her and out of panic, he shot her leaving her with injuries,” said Ochieng’.
It was later revealed to be a case of mistaken identity. The victim was rushed to Kitale County Referral Hospital and admitted.
The county police boss said the businessman had been been disarmed pending investigations.
” The suspect is in our custody helping us with investigations, we will later arraign him in court and charge him for attempted murder”, added Ochieng’.
Ocheing’ cautioned all licensed firearm holders not to use their lethal weapons recklessly and urged them to report any person suspected to be Kangogo.
“If you are a licensed firearm holder, despite the fact that Chemutai is said to be dangerous, it does not mean if you meet that you shoot any lady by the name Chemutai, there are justifiable circumstances you are allowed to use firearm,” argued Ochieng’.
Efforts by ‘TV47’ to speak to the victim who’s currently in hospital bore no fruit.
