Cooking Oil: How to stop looters the South African way

Kenyans know ‘Arimis’, a petroleum jelly made for milking cows but that has since found all manner of unintended uses including soothing baby bums, nursing cracked lips, and, some say, as lubricant for self-pleasuring.

But our brothers Down South have found an ingenious use of Arimis’ cousin- cooking oil. Frustrated by the ongoing riots, which pour looters into stores, shop workers at a Shoprite in KwaZulu-Natal, poured cooking oil at the entrance thus creating a dangerously slimy slide.

KwaZulu-Natal is one of the areas worst hit by the riots. The riots were occasioned by the jailing of ex-President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court. Zuma was thrown into the slammer for 15 months.

Times Live quotes the stores’ manager Mduduzo Sikhakhane as saying that the trick succeeded in saving them from looters.

“No-one could go to that side because they were slipping like crazy,” he said.
