Brother of popular Benga musician commits suicide over KSh700,000 debt

A family in Kirinyaga County is mourning the death of their kin who committed suicide allegedly over a KSh700,000 debt.

Irungu Wanjaro was a brother to late benga musician George Wanjaro. He reportedly committed suicide by jumping into River Sagana after leaving a suicide note saying, “mutikajethe muno ndi rui rwa Sagana stress ni ikujuraga. (don’t search for me, I am in River Sagana; Stress is killing me.”

His car was found abandoned at the bridge by relatives and friends yesterday. A frantic search for him was met by sad news that a body had been found floating on Masinga Dam several kilometres away. It was positively identified as belonging to Irungu.

Benga musician Wanjaro, Irungu’s elder brother died in 2007 after a short illness.

Irungu was the only remaining off-spring in the family. His four siblings (including the popular musician) died in several intervals.

George died in 2007 after a short illness. He was known for hits such as Date Ya Mbere, Bye Bye Peterson and Dainnah. He was married to Molline Atieno, his former pupil. Atieno hails from Migori County. In later interviews, she claimed his late husband’s family isolated and disinherited her.

The late Irungu reportedly owed the KSh700,000 to a businessman of Somali origin. Friends say the deadline for paying the loan was today. “The pressure to pay had pushed him to depression,” says a friend who requested anonymity.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.
