KDF renovates school, digs borehole at primary school in Lamu County

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops are renovating a school and developing a borehole at Mararani in Kiunga ward, Lamu County in the ongoing Multi-Agency Field Training Exercise.

The renovation works at Mararani Primary School include the construction of a new classroom for grade four pupils, replacement of roofing material, paintworks and other minor repairs to classrooms and offices. Mararani Primary School had only three classrooms for all the pupils and upon completion of grade three, students were forced to transfer to neighbouring schools.

“Mararani Primary School has been in poor state for the last six years. KDF came around, pledged to assist and now they are fulfilling their promise,” said Hajj Guzana, a teacher at the school.

Furthermore, KDF sunk a fresh water borehole at the school with an output of over 6,000 litres of water per hour.  Installation of a solar operated electric water pump at the borehole- estimated to serve over 1,500 residents, is on course.

Aboud Omar, a village elder said, “We used to share a water source, far from this village, with wild animals but we are grateful that KDF has come along to assist us access safe and clean water.”

The facelift of Mararani Primary School and development of the borehole are among many community projects that the Multi-Agency Field Training Exercise has undertaken to improve the quality of lives of people in Lamu, Garissa and Tana River counties.

The exercise, which was launched by Chief of the Defence Forces late last month, has brought together Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies to exercise how to effectively operate in a Multi-Agency framework.
